On Monday, 18 November, International School Savremena welcomed the representatives from the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and the Faculty of Political Sciences, who held quite an interesting workshop entitled “Popular Democracy” for Year 12 and Year 13 students.
The concept of democracy
Since democracy is a very abstract concept for the students, who might not be familiar with the electoral process, it was very important to cover this topic with them. Savremena’s students found this workshop very useful because they were explained the core of the democratic society. It was necessary for them to know that they must be the decision makers. Through this interactive workshop, Savremena’s students got to know the importance of democratic values, political participation and civic activism.
Responsibility as the most important aspect of Popular Democracy
Although young people know little about their rights (or misunderstand them), they should first learn about responsibility. Above all, they should be responsible towards themselves and make decisions according to priorities. Then, there is social responsibility which affects their future.
Westminster Foundation for Democracy
The Westminster Foundation for Democracy is highly engaged with the development of democracy and emphasises the importance of the involvement of all social groups in democratic processes.
More about the project
The main goal of the project is to promote democratic values and the political education of young people who gain the right to vote, and make them aware of the importance of social activism in general. The project is supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and the British Embassy.
International School Savremena once again showed its modern and innovative forms of education with the students willing to cooperate and communicate.
