School day on Wednesday ended quite interesting for Year 10 students. Accompanied by their Chemistry and Geography teachers, they visited the Museum of African Art and learnt about the traditional arts of a number of West African societies.
In addition to the permanent display based on significant examples of primarily West African art, the students also had an opportunity to see their current exhibition showcasing contemporary Namibian art. The current exhibition “Reflect” is part of the celebration marking the 30th anniversary of the independence of one of the last colonies on the African continent.
The Museum of African Art is the first and only museum in the region entirely dedicated to the cultures and arts of the African continent. It was established from the private collection of a Yugoslav diplomat and his wife, and was the result of his long service as ambassador in Africa. The collection contains many rare and valuable pieces from the regions in which he travelled.
The students experienced the principles of multiculturalism and cultural diversity, and had a great time.
