Last week, International School students from Year 11 and 12, accompanied by their chemistry teacher Mrs Marija Kovački, embarked on an insightful tour of the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, Department of Life Sciences, to explore the field of environmental science. Guided by Mrs Milena Dimitrijević, the students had the opportunity to visit laboratories and departments of the Institute, where they learned about sampling techniques and cultivation methods.
Students gained practical experience and witnessed the synergy of scientific disciplines in addressing environmental issues
During the tour, Mrs Milena Dimitrijevic introduced the students to algal indicator species and explained their role in assessing habitats, highlighting how their viability indicates the quality of aquatic ecosystems. The students also had the opportunity to observe advanced equipment used for chemical and biochemical analyses, gaining an understanding of their significance in habitat assessment. The tour concluded at the laboratory for aquatic ecosystems, where the employees showcased how chemical and biochemical analyses contribute to water quality assessments and predictions related to fish populations.
In this way, the students gained practical hands-on experience and witnessed the synergy between different scientific disciplines in addressing environmental issues. This immersive encounter fostered a deep appreciation for the real-world applications of scientific knowledge. We hope that it will inspire the students to pursue careers in environmental science and contribute to the preservation of our planet’s ecosystems.
