Pursuant to Article 34 for of the International School Statute, the Executive Board of International School, at the meeting held on the 25 August 2020 has adopted the following:
Regulations on schoolwork, homework and examination assignments, plagiarism and copyright violations
I Basic provisions
Article 1
The practice of schoolwork, homework and projects are one of the vital means by which students can better acquire the required material in each curriculum area, while examination assignments and projects which represent the examination component are an obligatory requirement for sitting the Cambridge exam.
The prime responsibility of the aforementioned assignments’ completion rests on the students themselves, while the teachers, parents, and administrators can also play an integral role in a successful homework experience with their help.
These Regulations regulate the production, storing and submission of the assignments, as well as plagiarism and copyright violations in regards to the aforementioned assignments.
II Schoolwork, homework and project assignments
Article 2
Schoolwork represents the assignments that students do in school during their timetabled lessons. Schoolwork includes, but is not limited to:
- written exercise during lessons;
- assessments;
- mock exam;
- school project;
- essay writing.
Homework is a task that a student does at home or during the period intended for learning at school (Study time). Homework includes, but is not limited to:
- preparation for assignments or other knowledge tests;
- research project;
- creating a presentation to present research work;
- writing essays or other literary works.
Project assignments are tasks that can be done in a team or individually, on the school premises, in class, or at home, and include, but are not limited to:
- individual or team research project;
- creating a presentation, brochure or other multimedia content in order to present the project;
- keeping a project diary.
Article 3
The student is obliged to hand in school assignments by the end of the lesson during which the school assignment is planned.
A student who is justifiably absent is not obliged to subsequently submit a school assignment, unless the teacher assigns him a school assignment as homework.
The student is obliged to submit homework by the deadline set by the teacher, which is indicated on the school platform for students or in the Google Classroom, as follows:
- the student submits homework via the school platform if the homework is assigned via the platform;
- the student submits the homework via Google Classroom if the homework is assigned via Google Classroom.
Students submit assignments in the ways described in points 1 and 2 of paragraph 3 of this article, exclusively via their own accounts.
If the student is justifiably absent from class, he is still obliged to submit the homework in the manner provided for in this Article in paragraph 3, unless otherwise agreed with the subject teacher, whereby the manner of completing and handing over the homework follows the teacher’s instructions.
Project assignments have a deadline of at least two weeks, and a maximum of four weeks for elaboration and submission, unless it is a long-term project, for which the subject teacher determines the duration and manner of elaboration, as well as the manner of submitting the project assignments.
The student submits project assignments in electronic form to the teacher via a personal email account.
The teacher is not obliged to accept schoolwork, homework and project assignments if they are submitted after the deadlines specified in this article. In that case, the teacher has the right to give the student the grade U (Ungraded).
The teacher is obliged to submit and evaluate the assignments within the deadlines specified in this article in accordance with the Cambridge International Assessment Education Regulations.
The teacher is not obliged to explain his / her grade, but he / she is obliged to provide instructions to the student on how the task can be improved.
III Exam assignments
Article 4
Exam assignments are assignments that represent components of the Cambridge exams from a chosen subject, which include, but are not limited to:
- projects;
- multimedia content;
- shorter or longer essays;
- practical work and / or experiments.
Students of the International School have the right to the support of teachers in the preparation of exam assignments, whereby the obligation of teachers is to:
- explain the content and purpose of the assignment;
- explain the ways in which students can do the assignment;
- present the correct ways of quoting and referencing sources.
The teacher is forbidden to:
- conducts research instead of students;
- makes any part of the exam assignment instead of the student;
- corrects or improves the work of the student after the student submits the work;
- gives instructions on improving the student’s exam assignment after submitting the paper.
IV Duties and responsibilities of teachers
Article 5
Teachers have the freedom to independently assess what type and scope of school, homework or project assignment they will assign to students, according to the curriculum, while the type and scope of the exam assignment is determined according to the requirements of Cambridge Assessment International Education.
Teachers are required to adhere to the following guidelines:
- at the beginning of the school year, each subject teacher gives information to students orally and by e-mail about: the type of schoolwork, homework, project and exam assignments, deadlines, the manner of making and evaluating them;
- each subject teacher is obliged to respect the form and manner of assigning schoolwork, homework and project assignments according to paragraph 3 of Article 3 of these Regulations;
- each subject teacher is obliged to emphasize the importance of homework, schoolwork, projects and exam assignments at the meeting with parents at the beginning of the school year and to acquaint them with the procedure for making them;
- each subject teacher has 5 (five) days to review, correct and give feedback on the schoolwork, homework to the student or his / her parent / guardian, and 7 (seven) days when it comes to the project or exam assignment;
- if the subject teacher assesses that there is a need to correct or refine something in homework or project work, he can ask the student to do it in the period provided for review, except when it comes to the exam assignment;
- the teacher must not provide assistance to the student in preparing the exam assignment;
- if the subject teacher for justified reasons is not able to review schoolwork, homework, exam or project assignments within the prescribed period, he is obliged to inform the students about it in time;
- if the subject teacher accepts the student’s objection to the evaluation of the homework or project assignment, he is obliged to provide him with an additional 2 (two) days for finishing the same for the homework and 5 (five) days for the project assignment;
- the subject teacher is obliged to provide feedback on the quality of work and guidelines for improvement in the comments, except when it comes to the exam assignments;
- the teacher’s comments must not affect the quality of the exam assignment that the student submits as an exam component for the Cambridge exams;
- based on personal assessment, the subject teacher has the opportunity to adjust the difficulty and type of homework or project assignments respecting the principle of individualization and differentiation;
- each subject teacher in assessment must adhere to the Regulations on student assessment with the possibility of using descriptive or numerical assessment;
- each subject teacher is required to adhere to the Cambridge International Assessment Education Regulations when grading and giving instructions for exam assignments;
- each subject teacher can assign a maximum of 1 (one) homework per week, while for project assignments the maximum is 2 (two) per month;
- the teacher is not obliged to accept a schoolwork, homework, exam or project assignment if it is submitted after a specified deadline;
- number, method of preparation and criteria for exam assignments are determined by the Cambridge Assessment International Education.
V Obligations and responsibilities of students and parents
Article 6
Students are expected to understand the importance of making school, homework, exam or project assignments and to follow all instructions regarding the manner and deadlines for making them.
Students have the obligation to:
- to receive instructions for assignments;
- to get acquainted orally and by e-mail with the type of homework, schoolwork, exam or project assignments, deadlines, method of preparation and evaluation of the same;
- to confirm by e-mail that they are familiar with and agree with the abovementioned;
- to prepare assignments within the allotted time;
- to inform the subject teacher if they are not able, for justified reasons, to submit a homework, exam or project assignment within the prescribed period;
- to make an effort to do a homework or project assignment in the best possible way;
- to address the subject teacher if they need help or additional explanation before the deadline for the assignment;
- to remain in additional classes at the request of the subject teacher in order to work on a schoolwork, homework, exam or project assignment;
- to independently do an assigned schoolwork, homework, exam or project assignment, because it is their obligation, and not the obligation of their parents / guardians, brothers, sisters, friends or other relatives;
- to get to know and respect the rules of doing assignments that will be presented to them at the beginning of the school year;
- to familiarize and respect the section of these Regulations relating to the prevention of plagiarism and copyright infringement;
- to cooperate with the members of the group, if it is a schoolwork, homework, exam or project assignment of that type.
Students have the right to:
- receive feedback on the quality of work and guidelines for improvement, unless it is a exam assignment;
- request an extension of the deadline required for the preparation of a homework or project assignment if they are justifiably prevented;
- lodge a complaint with the subject teacher if they are not satisfied with the evaluation, except in the case of an examination assignment, when the evaluation is conducted in accordance with the Cambridge Assessment International Education Regulations.
Article 7
Parents / guardians play an important role in the process of doing homework, exams and project assignments. Monitoring the information they receive by e-mail on a weekly basis about completed homework, exams or project assignments is the responsibility of each parent / guardian.
Parents / guardians are expected to:
- monitor the preparation of schoolwork, homework, exam and project assignments through an electronic diary, platform and e-mail notifications on a weekly basis;
- encourage the development of the abovementioned assignments;
- help organize the time needed to complete homework, exams and project assignments;
- support the school in the realisation of the principles of work which imply that all homework and project assignments are done in the school in the allotted time;
- get in touch with the subject teacher, if there are justified reasons for extending the deadline required for the preparation of homework, exam or project assignment;
- encourage the request for additional help from the subject teacher if there is a need for it.
VI Prevention of plagiarism and copyright violations
Article 8
Plagiarism is the use of ideas, sentences and standpoints of other authors in your own work, without adequate reference to the title of the work or the name of the author.
Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:
- the use of sentences, specific terms coined by other authors and the ideas of other authors in the work of students without adequate reference to the work or name of the author;
- changing the form of sentences or the phrase of the author, while the content and idea of another author are transferred in full without adequate reference to the work or name of the author;
- any form of paraphrasing the author’s idea or work, without adequate reference to the author’s work or name;
- presenting the original sentence or phrase of the author without quotation marks (without citation form), even when an adequate reference to the work or name of the author is given;
- use of work and / or parts of work that are not the original work of students.
Students are prohibited from submitting work in which plagiarized parts are listed.
The teacher is obliged to check whether the student’s work is his original work.
If the student’s schoolwork, homework or project assignment contains elements of plagiarism, the teacher has the right to refuse the work and give the student the grade U.
Exam assignments that contain elements of plagiarism will not be taken into consideration, which may result in the student failing the exam.
Article 9
Copyright violation represents the unauthorised execution of any action stipulated by the exclusive rights of the copyright holder, the failure to pay the reimbursement, as well as the failure to fulfill other obligations toward the copyright holder.
Copyright is the exclusive right of the author:
- to have their authority recognised over their work;
- to have their name, pseudonym or sign specified on each copy of the work, i.e. specified in all instances of communicating the work publicly, except when this is technically not possible or unfeasible;
- to publish their work and determine the way their work is to be published;
- to protect the integrity of their work;
- to oppose the exploitation of their work in a manner that may pose a threat to their honour or reputation;
- to economically utilise their work, as well as works that were created as remakes of their work;
- to forbid or allow other parties to make notes or copies of their complete work or any of its parts;
- to forbid or allow other parties to place the original work or any of its copies on the market, via selling or any other manner of property transfer;
- to forbid or allow other parties to lease their original work or any of its copies;
- to forbid or allow other parties to perform their work;
- to forbid or allow other parties to present their work;
- as well as other rights not provided in these Regulations, but that are stipulated by the Law on Copyright and Related Rights
Teaching materials are the property of the School and the intellectual property of teachers, i.e. employees of the School.
Students and employees are prohibited from downloading, distributing and duplicating teaching materials without the approval of the School.
Students are not allowed to:
- copy, transcribe or otherwise use the works and / or parts of other students’ works in their assignments;
- present, copy and distribute school teaching materials to third parties;
- present, copy and share school assignments with third parties;
- copy and share homework, project or exam assignments with third parties;
- use other people’s copyrighted works without approval or without adequate reference to the title of the work and the name of the author.
In case of detected plagiarism or copyright violation, the measures from the school’s Code of Conduct will be applied.
In case of plagiarism and copyright violations when creating exam assignments, the student may be disqualified or fail the Cambridge exam.
In case of detected plagiarism or copyright violation, the School is obliged to inform the parents about the consequences set out in paragraphs 6 and 7 of this article.
VII Final provisions
Article 10
These Regulations shall enter into force on the eighth day following their publication on the school notice board.
